Culture Note™
Released on 4 January 2023 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black. The Mexico 66 is a line of shoes released by Onitsuka Tiger in 1966, and it remains the design most closely tied to the brand's early identity. Retail accounts trace its inspiration to training shoes that originally debuted at the Mexico Games in 1966, which is where the name comes from. It was conceived as a low, narrow running shoe of its era, long before running silhouettes became everyday wear, and its 1960s origins are still legible in the details that carried into later reissues: the slim profile, the simple stitching, and the narrow heel flap that retail descriptions keep pointing back to.
Buyers come to the Mexico 66 for a slim, low-profile alternative to bulkier modern sneakers. It sits flat under trousers and cropped hems, which is a large part of why it travelled so well beyond running. In India it has become a common pick for people building a pared-back rotation: light enough for warm weather, easy to wear with casual and semi-formal fits alike, and produced across a wide spread of colourways, so most buyers can find an entry point that suits how they dress.
The model's cultural weight owes a great deal to cinema. It became popular after Bruce Lee's film Game of Death, in which he wore a generic pair that looks very similar to the Mexico 66, though with a different stripe design. That association fixed the slim, striped profile in popular memory and helped carry a 1960s training shoe far beyond the track, turning it into one of the most recognisable flat-soled sneakers in circulation.
This release wears a White/Black execution with a suede / leather build. It reached the market in 2023. Across its many editions the Mexico 66 stays low and slim, holding the retro running shape it started with. Uppers are typically cut from leather, with suede often used for the crossed Tiger stripes on the side panels and for overlays at the toe, eye stay and heel. A T-toe overlay and a narrow heel flap are recurring structural details, along with visible stitching and heel-cross reinforcements on some editions. Underfoot sits a cushioned insole over a thin, flexible rubber outsole, and flat cotton laces finish the top. Exact materials shift between editions, so the colour-specific description for the pair on this page carries the precise build.
