Culture Note™
Released on 15 January 2023 and part of the Mexico 66 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White. Black White on the standard Mexico 66 is the model at its most utilitarian. The base shape was built in 1966 as Onitsuka's flagship challenge to Adidas and Puma, released ahead of the 1968 Mexico City Games and the first shoe to wear the Tiger Stripes. Here the upper runs black with white crossed stripes and a white sole edge, so the shoe's outline is drawn in negative: dark body, bright graphic. Where the SD version treats that pairing as a dressed up proposition, this is the everyday one, the pair you reach for without thinking because it never needs to be considered against what you are wearing.
Two recipes. First, black cargo trousers with a white tee and a grey zip hoodie, an everyday fit where the shoe reads as a neutral rather than a feature. Second, dark grey flannel trousers and a black roll neck for a cold evening, using the white stripes as the only break. This is the most weather tolerant colourway in the line and the best choice if you want one pair to do everything. Take your usual size in a narrow, slightly long last. Condition the black leather regularly so it does not fade grey, clean the white stripes with a soft brush and mild soap, and dry away from direct heat.
The Mexico 66's return to relevance since the early 2020s came from the wider swing away from chunky sneakers toward slim, low profile silhouettes, helped by celebrity wear and by younger shoppers picking up a shape their parents' generation never wore. Black and white executions are the entry point into that: no colour commitment, no film reference, no collaboration premium. It is worth being clear that the modern brand is a fashion label, revived by Asics in 2002 after roughly twenty five dormant years, and not a performance running brand. Performance sits with Asics, and Onitsuka Tiger is set to move to OT GROUP Corporation from January 2027.
Leather upper on a narrow last, slim toe, low flat profile and a thin cupsole, with the Tiger Stripes stitched on as overlay panels that hold the quarter together. Black is the most durable colour choice in the range for daily wear, since it hides toe creasing and street dust that would be obvious on Birch, cream or white. The white stripes and sole edge carry all the visual load, which makes them the maintenance priority. There is no arch support and very little cushioning: the shoe flexes with the foot from the first wear and gives you ground feel rather than isolation. Laces run long and sit flat through the low eyestay.
