Part of the P-6000 line. This release has a mesh upper in Metallic Silver/Summit White/Wolf Grey. Metallic Silver and Wolf Grey is a running colourway from a period when running shoes were built to look fast standing still. The P-6000 belongs to Nike's archive running family, the shapes the company produced once it had stopped importing other people's shoes and started designing its own. That transition happened in 1972, when the Onitsuka Tiger relationship ended and the Nike name arrived, carrying the Swoosh that Carolyn Davidson had drawn and that first appeared in June 1971. Everything the company learned about lightness in the decades after, from Bowerman's waffle sole onward, shaped these silhouettes. In silver and grey, the shoe reads as pure hardware, which is exactly the register it was designed for.
Two ways. First, full tech: grey nylon trousers, a black zip top and a shell jacket, where the metallic panels tie into technical fabrics and the whole thing reads as one system. Second, softened: light blue denim, a white tee and a navy cardigan, so the silver becomes jewellery at the bottom of a plain outfit. This is a walking shoe with a low, flat feel rather than a plush one, good for long city days. Size true; archive runners tend to fit narrow through the midfoot. Metallic finishes scratch and dull, so avoid brushes on those panels, wipe them with a soft damp cloth and clean the mesh separately.
Nike's running heritage is the oldest thing it owns. Steve Prefontaine, Bill Bowerman's athlete at Oregon, was the first track endorser and became the brand's symbol of running as attitude, and there is a statue of him at the company's headquarters. This is an archive running build: layered mesh panels with synthetic overlays cut over them, a stitched Swoosh running the length of the quarter, and a shaped midsole with a visible tooling break rather than a smooth wall. Metallic Silver panels are the interesting part, because a reflective or metallic finish behaves like a different material to the eye depending on light, which is why the shoe changes character between daylight and street light.
