Origin
Released on 23 December 2021 and part of the Adilette line. This release has a textile upper in Off White/Off White/Core Black. Off White is the hardest colour to put on a slide and the most rewarding. It refuses to look like gym equipment, which is exactly the point of handing the Adilette to a designer collaborator in the first place. Pharrell Williams occupies that role at adidas alongside a list the company assembled over decades, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 line to Stella McCartney from 2004 and later Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. The Adilette 2.0 is a deliberately humble base for that: a slide descended from a shoe made for changing room floors, now treated as a considered object where the finish and the tone matter more than any logo.
Utility
Pale tones want soft, unstructured clothing. Recipe one: ecru linen trousers with a white vest for summer heat, worn barefoot, where the slide reads as part of the outfit rather than as a shortcut. Recipe two: light grey sweat shorts with a cream tee and low white socks, a tonal build that keeps a near white slide from looking accidental. Off White marks fastest at the heel and the strap edges, so wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap after every few wears rather than waiting. Rinse off salt and chlorine immediately. Air dry away from sunlight, since heat and UV will yellow a pale moulded surface over time.
Influence
The slide is the most democratic object adidas makes, which is why designers keep returning to it. adidas gained its cultural authority partly by accident, when Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986 and the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed, and partly by design, through the fashion partnerships it pioneered. A designer collaborator taking a poolside slide seriously belongs to the second story, and it works because the object already has universal reach. Off White pushes it towards fashion territory without changing what it is, which is the trick the best of these collaborations pull off: same function, entirely different reading.
Construction
A single wide strap over a moulded footbed is the entire architecture, which puts all the pressure on surface and proportion. Off White exposes that immediately, because a warm near white shows every line of the moulding and every edge where the strap meets the base. There is no contrast trim to distract you, so the shoe is judged on its curve. Practically, a pale slide will discolour along the footbed contact points faster than a dark one, and that patina is either the appeal or the problem depending on how you wear it. The Three Stripes heritage adidas has carried since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 sits quietly in the background here.
