PureBoost 23 Putty Grey Black
PureBoost 23 Putty Grey Black
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Nic Galway and released on 5 March 2024 as part of the PureBoost line. This release has a mesh upper in Putty Grey/Silver Metallic/Core Black. PureBoost exists to make one argument, which is that Boost is good enough to be the entire shoe. adidas launched the material in its running range in 2013 after developing it with German chemical company BASF, and where other models caged and reinforced it, PureBoost let it stand exposed. The 23 generation continues that. Putty Grey with black is the most wearable colourway the line offers: a soft warm grey upper, a darker sole and detailing, a combination that reads as neither running kit nor fashion sneaker. Where a triple white version is a display of the material's texture, this one is built to be worn without thought, which is arguably closer to what the shoe is for.
Utility
Recipe one: charcoal technical trousers with a grey half zip and a black shell, a commuter uniform where the putty upper keeps a dark outfit from flattening out. Recipe two: stone chinos with a navy overshirt and a white tee, using the warm grey as a bridge between the two. This is a standing all day, city walking and travel shoe first, and an easy run shoe second. Knit uppers run snug then relax, so stay true to size and lace lightly. Never machine wash it, since heat and agitation deform Boost and distort the knit. Spot clean with mild soap and a soft brush, and dry away from direct heat or sunlight.
Influence
adidas has repeatedly bet its identity on a material or a mechanism, from the adidas 1 of 2005, marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe with a microprocessor performing five million calculations a second, to springblade's splayed blades replacing foam. Boost is the bet that paid, carrying the Ultraboost, the NMD, Energy Boost, PureBoost and adizero Adios Boost. Its temperature stability matters more than marketing usually admits, and in Indian conditions, where heat and monsoon damp both punish standard foam, that is the practical reason people who own a Boost shoe end up buying another one.
Construction
Boost is a thermoplastic polyurethane made from thousands of fused pellets, and its bounce comes from the way the material is processed rather than from the raw polymer, which is why it returns more energy than the industry standard EVA foam and stays consistent as temperatures move. On PureBoost the midsole runs full length with minimal caging, so you feel the pellets compress and rebound directly under the foot. The upper is a knit that stretches with the foot rather than holding it in rigid panels, with the Three Stripes worked in as support bands. Putty Grey across the knit with black on the sole and detailing hides urban dirt far better than a pale midsole does, which is a real advantage in daily use.
