Released on 12 December 2023 and part of the ReactX Infinity Run line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/Bronzine/Olive Aura/Sea Glass. Nike began because Bill Bowerman thought running shoes were too heavy, and the company has been chasing foam ever since: Lunarlite for lightness, ZoomX, an altered Pebax, for the racing end of the range, and a succession of everyday cushioning platforms for the runs that are not races. The ReactX Infinity Run 4 sits at that everyday end, where the job is to absorb repetition rather than to produce speed. Black with Bronzine gives it a warm metallic accent against a full dark upper, a colourway for early mornings and late evenings rather than for a start line. Most running is exactly that, unwatched and unglamorous, which is the market this shoe serves.
Two uses. One, training: easy and long runs, recovery days after speed work, and standing days when your legs are already tired, paired with a moisture wicking sock rather than cotton. Two, off duty: black joggers, a dark tee, a shell jacket, where Bronzine reads as a metallic detail rather than as a running shoe on the street. Size with about a thumbnail of room at the toe, because feet swell over distance in Indian heat. Rinse mud off with cool water only, never machine wash, remove the insoles to dry, and stuff with paper rather than drying near a radiator or in direct sun.
Nike's running culture began with Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, the brand's first track endorser and still its symbol of running as attitude rather than as exercise; his statue stands at the company headquarters. The everyday runner came later, and Nike went after that person directly through Nike Plus, the partnership with Apple that put run tracking into the shoe and turned solo training into data you could compare. This trainer belongs to that audience: not athletes, but people who log kilometres and want proof. The 1988 Just Do It film, featuring an eighty year old runner named Walt Stack, made the case first.
A high cushion daily trainer is built to keep you comfortable across repeated, unremarkable kilometres, which means a tall stack of foam, a supportive midfoot and an upper that holds without pressure points. Nike's engineered upper thinking descends from Flywire, which used cables so the shoe could carry less material while still locking the foot, and from Dri-FIT, the moisture wicking fabric platform that keeps sweat moving out of the fabric. Expect a soft, protective ride rather than a snappy one, and a shoe that suits slower and longer efforts. Dark uppers with metallic accents hide road grime well, which makes this a practical monsoon season trainer.
