Released on 5 October 2023 and part of the ReactX Infinity Run line. This release has a gore-tex upper in Black/Anthracite/Volt/White. Nike began in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports because Bill Bowerman, a University of Oregon track coach, thought American runners deserved lighter and better shoes than the domestic market offered. Everything in the modern running range descends from that complaint. The Infinity Run line is the stability leaning end of it, a shoe designed for the runner logging steady miles rather than chasing a personal best, and ReactX is the foam generation that carries it. This GORE-TEX build in Black and White is the winter and monsoon version: same daily trainer, sealed against weather. It is a quietly practical object in a brand famous for loud ones, and the black upper is chosen for the same reason road runners choose black in wet months.
This is a weather shoe, so use it that way. Wet season road runs with a mid crew merino sock, ankle length tights and a light shell, letting the GORE-TEX handle spray from the road. Second use is commuting: black trainer, dark straight leg trousers, a rain jacket, and you arrive with dry feet. Size as you would any daily trainer, allowing a thumbnail of toe room, and account for the membrane making the fit slightly snugger than the standard version. Do not use it for hot dry runs, as the membrane traps heat. After wet miles, remove the insoles, stuff with newspaper and air dry away from direct heat, since radiators wreck both foam and membrane.
Running is where Nike's culture actually starts. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, became the brand's first track endorser and its enduring symbol of running as attitude rather than sport, and there is a statue of him at Nike headquarters. Just Do It landed on 1 July 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, not an elite athlete, which told everyone the brand was talking to people who simply go out in bad conditions. That is precisely the buyer for a waterproof daily trainer. Advertising Age later named the line one of the top five ad slogans of the twentieth century and it sits in the Smithsonian, which is a strange fate for three words about turning up.
The upper is built around a GORE-TEX membrane, which is what makes this version different from the standard model: water stays out, and the tradeoff is a warmer, less airy shoe. Black dominates the upper with White on the midsole and tooling, a sensible split when the shoe will meet puddles. ReactX foam does the cushioning, part of Nike's long push toward lighter and more responsive midsoles that runs from Lunarlite through to ZoomX. The Infinity build uses a wide, flared midsole platform for stability under a tiring stride rather than a plate for speed. Expect a cushioned, guided ride, more insulated underfoot than a mesh trainer, and a shoe that stays looking clean in bad weather.
