Culture Note™
Released on 3 August 2023 and part of the ReactX Infinity Run line. This release has a flyknit upper in Black/White/Black. The Infinity Run exists because most runners are not racing anybody. Nike's entire origin was a coach's complaint about equipment: Bill Bowerman thought American runners deserved lighter, better shoes than the domestic market offered, which is why Blue Ribbon Sports imported Onitsuka Tiger from 1964 and why Bowerman poured rubber into a waffle iron until he had a sole of his own. The Infinity line follows the same logic in the opposite direction, prioritising a supportive, cushioned ride over pace. ReactX is the foam named on this fourth version. Oreo is the nickname the community gave the black and white treatment, because a colourway named by shoppers always beats a colourway named by marketing.
A black and white running shoe is the most versatile thing in a kit bag. First: black tights or shorts, a white technical tee, and the shoe finishing a monochrome training fit that photographs well and disappears on the road. Second: black jeans, a grey hoodie and a white cap for off duty wear, where a bicolour trainer passes for a normal shoe. Size to running length with a thumbnail at the toe. It is built for road and treadmill, not trail. Clean white panels immediately after wet runs, since road grime sets grey once dry. Remove insoles to dry, and never use hot water, which hardens knit uppers over time.
Nike's running credibility is older than its fashion reputation. Steve Prefontaine was the first track athlete endorser and still stands as a statue at Nike headquarters, and the sponsored list that followed reads like a history of the sport: Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson, Allyson Felix. Just Do It arrived in 1988 with an 80 year old runner named Walt Stack, which told everyone the brand was addressing the whole field rather than the podium. The Infinity is that message in product form, a shoe built for the runner who wants to keep running rather than the one chasing 4.2 percent off a marathon.
Black and white split across a running shoe makes the geometry obvious, so you can actually see how the Infinity is put together: a wide, rockered platform, a raised sidewall that cups the foot rather than sitting flat beneath it, and a knit upper with a padded collar. ReactX is the foam doing the cushioning, tuned for absorbing repeated impact rather than returning it sharply, which is the difference between a daily trainer and a racer. Dri-FIT is Nike's moisture wicking fabric platform, and it is the reason a knit running upper stays tolerable in heat. The white sections are the maintenance job. Road spray marks them within a run or two on wet tarmac.
