    Culture Note™

Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 7 March 2023 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a nubuck upper in Black/Multi-Color. From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Force 1s among the models that carried that status, and the AF1 in particular became a fixture of mainstream American youth dress before it was ever considered a luxury object. Putting it in the hands of a jeweller closes a loop the culture had already drawn: the AF1 has been worn as jewellery for forty years, treated as something you keep clean, replace often and judge people by. This is the Air Force 1 Low, the original low top form, carrying the number 1837 that anchors the collaboration's name. The interesting part is not that a luxury house made a sneaker. It is that the sneaker already had the status.
A collaboration AF1 should be dressed simply or it turns into a flex nobody wanted to see. Recipe one: black tailored trousers with a fine gauge black knit, letting the shoe and any metal you are wearing be the only points of shine. Recipe two: raw indigo denim, a white tee and a black leather jacket, the classic AF1 uniform that has always suited the silhouette best. Do not stack loud logos on top of it. This is an evening and going out shoe, comfortable enough for long standing because of the cupsole. Take your usual AF1 size, which runs about a half large for most people. Clean by hand with foam, protect any hardware, and store in the box.
Nike has usually chosen ownership over partnership. It bought Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars and still holds it as its sole remaining major subsidiary, having sold Cole Haan, Bauer Hockey, Starter and Umbro, and it acquired the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021 and worked with artist Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022. Against that history, handing the Air Force 1 to an outside luxury house is a rarer move, and it works because the AF1 arrives with its own cultural weight rather than borrowing the partner's. Both names are status objects. Neither one is doing the other a favour.
The Air Force 1 Low's shape is one of the most fixed objects in footwear: a thick cupsole, a blunt toe, a wide panelled upper and a heel tab that has survived every fashion cycle since. Collaborations do not change it, they change what it is made of and what is written on it, so the material grade, the hardware and the detailing are where the money is. Nike Air sits in the midsole, the sealed pressurised gas unit that has been the family's cushioning platform since the technology became a design feature with the 1987 Air Max. On a collaboration pair, the accessory details and the finish are the delicate parts, so clean them by hand and never machine wash.
