Released on 2 March 2024 and part of On Running's Cloud 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Heather/Fossil. The Cloud 5 is the model most people mean when they say they own a pair of Ons: the slip on leaning everyday shape that carried the pod outsole from race numbers into ordinary life. It is the direct descendant of a garden hose glued to a sole in Zurich in 2010, and it is the shoe that helped push the brand to roughly 40 percent of the Swiss running shoe market and around 10 percent of Germany's by 2019. This women's pair lands in Heather Fossil, a flecked, dusty grey that reads as knitwear rather than sportswear. That is the whole reason the colourway exists, to make a technical outsole acceptable with clothes that are not technical at all.
Grey melange is the easiest colour in the range to place. Outfit one: navy wide leg trousers, a cream knit and a grey wool coat, where the shoe finishes a soft palette without introducing a hard colour. Outfit two: black leggings, an oversized sweatshirt and a crossbody bag for travel days and long walking, which is where a Cloud earns its keep. Women's sizing runs true with an easy entry, so stay at your usual size and use a thin sock to keep the shape clean. Keep it off wet grass, which stains heather fabric unevenly, and refresh with a suede and textile foam rather than water so the flecked surface stays lifted.
On's audience widened when Roger Federer took an equity stake in November 2019 and The Roger arrived as a limited edition in July 2020, and the everyday Cloud is the model that absorbed most of those new buyers. From March 2023 the tennis roster grew to include Iga Swiatek, then the world's top ranked player, keeping On credible in competition while the design leaning crowd wore the Cloud for how obviously engineered it looks. A heathered grey Cloud 5 sits exactly at that intersection: bought as a design object, worn as a walking shoe, and recognised across a room by the pod line alone rather than by any logo.
Heather Fossil is a melange treatment, so the upper carries flecks of light and dark instead of one flat grey, and the sole unit sits in a matching fossil tone. The cushioning underneath is CloudTec, which is a structure and not a material: hollow pods of engineered foam that compress horizontally and vertically, absorbing landing and supporting the foot in more than one direction as it rolls forward. That firm until loaded sensation is the Cloud signature. On is Swiss designed from Zurich, with production in Indonesia and Vietnam. Heathered fabric hides light marking well but holds dust, so brush it dry regularly and use a fabric cleaner rather than soaking, which flattens the melange.
