The silhouette borrows from Nike's early 2000s running shoes, an era of layered plastic overlays and reflective trims, and metallic gold is the most direct way to make that period's love of shine explicit rather than implied. This women's pair uses the finish across the overlays so the shoe catches light as you move. Nike arrived at this kind of design language through decades of running work that started in 1964, when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight sold imported Japanese running shoes from the boot of a car in Eugene, Oregon, and continued through Bowerman's waffle iron experiments that produced the 1974 Waffle Trainer.
