Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 24 September 2016 as part of the Yeezy Boost 350 line. This release has a primeknit upper in Steel Grey/Beluga/Solar Red. Beluga is one of the names that defined the line's whole approach to colour. The adidas era refused fashion season language and instead named its shoes after materials, terrain and animals, Pirate Black, Oxford Tan, Turtle Dove, Moonrock, Desert Rat, Wave Runner, and Beluga sits in that list as an original. It pairs a grey brown knit with a bright contrast stripe, the device that gave the 350 V2 its instantly readable signature when the model launched on 24 September 2016. If you want the shoe that people mean when they say Yeezy, this is close to the centre of it. adidas terminated the partnership on 25 October 2022, so this is archive stock now.
Utility
The contrast stripe is doing the work, so keep the rest neutral. Recipe one: grey sweatpants with a black tee and a black bomber, letting the stripe supply the only accent in an otherwise flat palette. Recipe two: mid wash straight leg denim with a plain white tee and a grey overshirt, which is the version that reads as everyday rather than performative. Avoid competing patterns and bright outerwear. Take your normal size; the fit is snug at the midfoot and the knit gives. The warm grey knit handles ordinary city dust well. Construction
The upper is one piece Primeknit, machine knitted with the contrast stripe woven straight into the structure, so the graphic warps naturally with the flex of the fabric instead of sitting on top of it as a separate part. Under it, the Boost midsole is expanded TPU pellet foam, speckled and visibly cellular, which is what makes the sidewall look the way it does and why the ride stays springy. There is no logo anywhere on the outside. The warm grey base is unusually forgiving with dust, while the bright stripe is the part that shows wear first. Fit is snug through the midfoot, the collar pulls on, and the knit takes a fortnight to settle around your foot.
