Yeezy Knit Runner Fade Onyx
Yeezy Knit Runner Fade Onyx
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 10 August 2023 as part of the Yeezy Knit Runner line. This release has a knit upper in Fade Onyx/Fade Onyx/Fade Onyx. The Knit Runner released on 23 September 2021 and is the purest version of an idea the label had been circling since the beginning: a shoe that is essentially a knitted sock with a sole. Primeknit gave the Boost 350 its sock like fit with no traditional panels back in 2015, and the Knit Runner removes even the pretence of a separate upper. Fade Onyx applies a graduated dark wash across that continuous knit, running from lighter to near black, an effect that is only possible because there is no seam or overlay to interrupt it. It sits in the label's material naming habit, with onyx joining moonrock and cinder as a stone rather than a colour, and it is one of the last silhouettes the catalogue produced.
Utility
A sock silhouette needs a trouser that ends cleanly, because a heavy hem ruins the line. First recipe: black tapered trousers with no break, sitting just at the collar, plus a black tee and a grey overshirt, so the gradient is visible. Second recipe: dark grey technical joggers with an elasticated cuff and a black crew, fully tonal, letting the fade be the only shift. Occasion: city wear, travel, evenings, and it is a genuinely good long haul flight shoe because it slips on and off. Fit is compressive, so people with high insteps should try first. Care: dry brush the knit, spot clean with mild soap, avoid soaking because knit holds water and dries slowly, and never machine wash.
Influence
By the time the Knit Runner arrived, the line had already changed how footwear is sold, with limited drops producing queue culture, bot buying and a resale economy the whole industry copied, and the partnership was worth roughly two billion dollars a year to adidas at its peak. Late silhouettes like this one show the design language pushing past the shapes that the mass market had already absorbed, moving toward pieces that look more like garments than sneakers. That work ended on 25 October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership after Kanye West's antisemitic public remarks, which the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous.
Construction
A single knitted piece forms the entire upper, so the shoe pulls on rather than opening up, and the fit depends on stretch rather than on lacing. That is the sock construction the line pioneered taken to its conclusion. The sole is a moulded unit bonded underneath, and with no panels, no eyelets and no logo, the outline and the gradient are all there is to look at. Fade Onyx is knitted with graduated yarn rather than printed, so the transition flexes with the foot instead of cracking. Expect a close, compressive fit through the midfoot, a light shoe for its size, and easier maintenance than pale knits because the darker end of the gradient hides city wear.
