Released on 22 October 2023 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Geode Teal/Purple Ink/Pure Platinum/Black. Geode Teal is a running colourway, and the Zoom Fly 5 is a running shoe in the most literal sense Nike offers: it exists because the company kept chasing the same thing Bill Bowerman was chasing when he poured rubber into a waffle iron looking for grip without weight. Nike's whole reason for being was that a track coach in Eugene thought American runners deserved better than what they could buy, and the modern expression of that is the ZoomX and carbon plate work that produced the Vaporfly. The Zoom Fly line takes that racing logic and rebuilds it for the miles that are not races. Teal, deep and mineral rather than bright, marks it as a training shoe rather than a stadium one.
Two uses. First, tempo days and long efforts on road: the plate and foam combination rewards a consistent cadence, so use it for the runs where you hold a pace rather than the ones where you jog and stop. Second, as a travel shoe with black joggers and a teal or grey quarter zip, because the mineral tone reads closer to outdoor gear than to gym kit. Size as you would any Nike running shoe, and expect a snug forefoot that wants a thin technical sock rather than cotton. Rotate it with a softer trainer if you run most days. Air dry only, never near a radiator, because heat is what kills responsive foam and softens the bond between foam and plate.
Nike's credibility in running is older than its credibility anywhere else. Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's own athlete at Oregon, was the brand's first track endorser and became its symbol of running as attitude rather than as sport, and there is a statue of him at Nike headquarters. Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Johnson and Allyson Felix followed as sponsored track athletes. The plated shoe changed the sport enough that World Athletics wrote rules around it, capping sole thickness at 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring general retail availability. A shoe like this is what that regulatory argument produced downstream: race technology, made legal and ordinary, sold to people running early in the morning.
The plated running shoe is Nike's clearest engineering statement. ZoomX is the brand's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive in its range, and the Vaporfly proved what happens when you pair that foam with a full length carbon fibre plate: peer reviewed work found improvements of up to 4.2 percent in marathon times. The Zoom Fly carries that same architecture into a build meant to survive repeated use rather than a handful of race days, which means more shoe under you and more structure holding the foam in place. The upper is a lightweight engineered knit built to hold the foot without adding weight, in the same spirit as Flywire. Style code DM8968 303 confirms the Geode Teal execution.
