Released on 14 September 2022 and part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in Total Orange/Bright Crimson/White/Black. The Zoom Fly is the shoe that carries the Vaporfly idea into ordinary weeks. When Nike launched the Vaporfly in 2017 with ZoomX foam and a full length carbon fibre plate, and peer research found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, the plated ride stopped being exotic and started being something club runners wanted to feel on a Tuesday. Zoom Fly 5 delivers it in a more durable form. Total Orange with Black is the loudest way to buy that: a high visibility orange with black tooling, which is exactly the palette you want at dawn on a road with traffic.
Put it where the pace lives. Tempo runs, progression long runs and marathon pace sessions are the correct home for a plated trainer, worn with thin technical socks and shorts or tights. The second use is early morning and low light running, where Total Orange is doing a genuine safety job rather than a stylistic one. Size half up from your casual size and expect a race style snug midfoot. Do not use it as your only shoe: rotate with a soft daily trainer so your calves and the foam both recover. After wet runs, remove the insole, air dry away from direct heat, and never put a plated shoe through a washing machine.
The plated shoe changed the rules, literally. World Athletics issued regulations on 31 January 2020 limiting sole thickness to 40mm, permitting one rigid plate and requiring four months of open retail availability, which is an unusual level of scrutiny for footwear and a direct result of what Nike built. Contrary to a persistent claim, the Vaporfly was not banned and compliant models remain legal. The company's standing to provoke that argument comes from its origins: Bill Bowerman, a University of Oregon track coach, founded Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964 with Phil Knight because he thought American runners deserved lighter and better shoes than they were being sold.
A plated trainer rather than a racer. The midsole uses a firmer, more durable foam than a pure ZoomX race shoe, with a plate running through it to create the rolling, tipping sensation that plated shoes are bought for, and an engineered mesh upper that holds the foot without adding weight. Nike's foam development runs Lunarlite to React to ZoomX, the last being an altered Pebax material, and each generation has pushed the same question of how much return you can get per gram. Total Orange covers the upper for visibility while Black on the midsole and outsole hides road wear. Expect stiffness through the forefoot and a distinctly forward ride.
