Culture Note™
Released on 20 December 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Thunder Blue/Black/White/Light Armory Blue. ZoomX was developed for racing, an altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive material Nike makes and the basis of the Vaporfly. The Invincible 3 takes it somewhere counterintuitive: instead of shaving seconds, it builds the tallest, softest platform Nike is willing to put under a daily runner. Thunder Blue is a deep, storm coloured treatment rather than a bright one, which suits the shoe's purpose. This is not a pair you race in and it is not a pair you show off in. It is the one you reach for when your legs are tired and the run still has to happen, and a dark saturated blue is the right uniform for that job.
Recipe one, running: navy or black tights, a blue long sleeve, a reflective gilet for winter, so the Thunder Blue reads as part of a cold weather kit. Recipe two, recovery day: black joggers, a grey crewneck, where the tall midsole is genuinely comfortable for standing and walking all day. Use it for recovery runs, easy days and long slow mileage on road and treadmill. Do not use it for track sessions, racing or trails, where the height works against you. Size true with a thumb of toe room. Air it out after every run, spot clean the upper, and never machine wash or heat dry a foam midsole.
The foam family under this shoe changed the rules of the sport. Peer research found the Vaporfly could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, and World Athletics responded on 31 January 2020 by limiting sole thickness to 40mm, allowing one rigid plate and requiring four months of general retail availability, with compliant models remaining legal. The trickle down is that recreational runners now train on materials developed under that scrutiny. Nike's claim to the running world goes back much further, to Steve Prefontaine as its first track endorser and its enduring symbol of running as attitude rather than sport, with a statue standing at the company's headquarters.
A maximally cushioned neutral trainer built on ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in Nike's range. The Invincible 3 uses a high stack of that foam with a wide base, because a tall soft platform needs width to stay stable. The upper is engineered for lockdown, since the only thing holding you steady on this much foam is the fit. Thunder Blue is dark enough to survive winter road spray, which matters on a shoe intended for volume. Foam this soft compresses with use, so the failure mode is a ride that goes flat rather than an upper that wears through. Judge its life by feel, not by looks.
