Released on 8 February 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX Invincible 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Pro Green/Volt/Black/Sail. The Wake Up Pack is a themed release, and the theme is the least glamorous fact about running: somebody has to get out of bed. Nike put that idea onto the Invincible Run Flyknit 3, which is the shoe in the range built for exactly that runner, the one accumulating easy mileage rather than chasing a personal best. It is a neat piece of alignment. ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the lightest and most responsive it makes, was developed for the Vaporfly and racing, and here it is doing service in a shoe named after an alarm clock. That is the whole history of Nike compressed: elite technology, eventually handed to everybody.
Recipe two, after: grey sweatpants, a plain hoodie, where the knit upper makes the shoe read as casual rather than technical. Use it for easy runs, recovery days and long slow mileage on road and treadmill, not for track work, racing or trails. Size true with a thumb of room at the toe and expect the Flyknit to feel snug for the first few wears. Air the pair after every run, spot clean the knit rather than soaking it, and never machine wash a foam midsole.
Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988 and first aired on 1 July 1988 with 80 year old runner Walt Stack, is the most direct ancestor of a pack built around waking up and going. Advertising Age named it one of the top five ad slogans of the twentieth century, and it is held in the Smithsonian. Nike's running credibility is older still, running through Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon, the brand's first track endorser and its symbol of running as attitude rather than sport, with a statue at the company's headquarters. A themed daily trainer speaks to the amateur that lineage was always aimed at.
A high stack neutral trainer built on ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in Nike's range, with a Flyknit upper. Flyknit wraps the foot like a sock and moves with it, which is essential on a tall soft platform where the upper is the only source of stability. Pack releases carry their own colour treatment across the knit and midsole rather than changing the build, so the shoe underneath performs like any Invincible 3: soft, bouncy and protective, and deliberately not fast. High stack foam loses its liveliness before the upper wears out, so retire it on how the ride feels rather than on how the knit looks.
