Released on 13 May 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX Streakfly line. This release has a mesh upper in Photo Blue/Black/Total Orange/University Red. The Streakfly is Nike's shoe for the distances where being brave matters more than being patient: five and ten kilometres, road miles, anything short enough to hurt the whole way. It uses ZoomX, the altered Pebax foam that is the lightest and most responsive in Nike's range and the material at the heart of the Vaporfly programme, but in a lower, leaner package. Photo Blue with University Red is an unapologetic race colourway, two saturated tones with no neutral to soften them. Short distance racing has always been the most emotional part of the sport, and this is a shoe designed to look like it knows that.
Two uses. One, racing: parkruns, five and ten kilometre road races and track efforts, worn with thin socks and laced firmly, because a light upper needs tension to hold the foot at speed. Two, sharpening: strides and interval sessions in the days before a race so your legs recognise the platform. Do not use these for easy running, since the foam has a short competitive life and the upper is not built for daily abuse. Clean by brushing, never in a machine, and dry in shade with the insoles removed so the midsole keeps its rebound. Carry them in a shoe bag rather than loose in your kit.
The spirit of this end of the range belongs to Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at the University of Oregon, who became Nike's first track endorser and the brand's lasting symbol of running as attitude rather than as sport. His statue stands at the company's headquarters, which tells you how much of Nike's self image is still built on a runner who raced the short stuff from the front. Every fast, light, uncomfortable shoe in the catalogue is arguing his case: that the point of racing is commitment, not comfort, and that equipment should get out of your way.
A short distance racer is built around low weight and ground feel rather than protection, so expect a thin, minimal upper, a lower platform than a marathon shoe and a firm, immediate ride that rewards being on your forefoot. ZoomX provides the cushioning here, chosen for responsiveness rather than for longevity. This is not a shoe for heel heavy easy running, and its upper will not survive being treated like a trainer. Race shoes also need dry storage: after a wet race, pull the insoles, brush out grit and let the shoe dry naturally in shade rather than anywhere warm.
