Released on 24 February 2022 and part of Nike's ZoomX Streakfly line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Flash Crimson/Hyper Violet/Black. Nike's racing instinct starts in 1964, when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight sold Japanese running shoes out of the boot of a car at Oregon track meets because Bowerman was convinced American runners deserved something lighter than the domestic market offered. The Streakfly is the far end of that argument, a road racer cut back to what a fast runner actually needs underfoot. It runs on ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the lightest, most responsive material in the range, the same foam that carries the Vaporfly. The white base keeps it lab clean and slightly clinical, the way a tool should look, while flash crimson does the job Nike colour has always done on a race shoe: it makes your stride readable from the side of the road.
Race day is the obvious answer, but the Streakfly is more useful than that. Pair it with white or bone split shorts and a plain singlet so the crimson stays the only loud thing on you, and keep socks low and thin, because bulk fights this kind of fit. For a Sunday tempo session, black tights and a crimson windbreaker turn it into a matched kit rather than a stray colour. Off the road it works with cropped tapered trousers if you accept that it will read as a running shoe, which is the point. Size true and try it with the socks you actually race in. Clean the white with a soft brush and mild soap, air dry away from heat, and never put ZoomX through a machine wash.
Nike's credibility on the road was earned on the track first, through Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon and the brand's first track endorser, who has a statue at the Beaverton headquarters. The line of sponsored runners after him, Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Allyson Felix, kept the brand in the middle of every serious conversation about speed. ZoomX changed that conversation again: peer research on the Vaporfly, the shoe that introduced the foam, found it could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, which pushed World Athletics to publish rules on 31 January 2020 capping sole thickness at 40mm and allowing one rigid plate. That is the argument the Streakfly is born into.
A thin, breathable racing upper sits over a ZoomX midsole, and that is essentially the whole proposition. ZoomX is altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive Nike makes, so the shoe hands energy back rather than swallowing it, and it asks your legs to hold their shape instead of doing that work for you. Expect a close, low volume fit through the midfoot, because a race shoe is built to sit on the foot rather than around it, which makes lacing pressure matter more here than on a daily trainer. White shows every wet road mark it meets, and the flash crimson accents are placed to catch light in motion. Judge this one at pace, not on a spec sheet.
