Released on 1 April 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in Hyper Pink/Black/Laser Orange. This is the shoe that rewrote road racing. Nike launched the Vaporfly in 2017 pairing ZoomX, its altered Pebax foam and the lightest, most responsive material in the company's range, with a full length carbon fibre plate designed to add spring to every step. Peer research found the combination could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent, a figure large enough to force a rules debate rather than a marketing one. The third generation continues that line, and Hyper Pink is the colour it wears to be seen. Race shoes are photographed from the side at speed, and a saturated pink is legible in that frame from a long way down the road.
Use one: goal pace marathon or half marathon racing, worn on the day with a thin technical sock and nothing else changed from your tested setup. Use two: one or two sharpening sessions before the race, long intervals at target pace, so your calves and feet learn the plate rather than meeting it cold on the start line. Do not wear these for easy runs; you get nothing back and you spend the foam. Hyper Pink shows road grime, so wipe the upper down after wet races. Never machine wash or heat dry, since both degrade foam and adhesives. Store them flat and treat total race mileage, not calendar age, as the retirement clock.
Nike's oldest claim is running. The company was founded by a University of Oregon track coach and his former runner, and its first track endorser was Steve Prefontaine, who still stands as a statue at the Beaverton headquarters. The Vaporfly is that heritage arriving as an engineering argument. It provoked World Athletics into publishing shoe rules on 31 January 2020 that capped sole thickness at 40mm, permitted a single rigid plate and required four months of open retail availability. Those rules did not remove the shoe from competition: compliant Vaporfly models remain legal, and the sport now regulates footwear as a variable the way it regulates track surfaces.
The stack here is doing two jobs at once. ZoomX supplies the compliance, compressing deeply and returning energy rather than deadening it, while the full length carbon plate stiffens the whole platform so the foot rolls forward instead of bending at the toe. That is why the shoe feels unstable at walking pace and settles once you reach race effort: it is designed for a specific rhythm and will not flatter anything slower. The upper is minimal by intent, since every gram sits under a marathon's worth of repetitions. ZoomX is soft foam, which wears faster than standard midsole material, so keep these for sessions and races rather than daily mileage.
