Released on 8 February 2024 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Pro Green/Volt/Sail/Black. The Wake Up Pack names the hour distance running actually happens: before work, before heat, before anyone is awake to see it. Nike has been selling that hour since 1 July 1988, when the first Just Do It film showed Walt Stack, an eighty year old runner, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, a piece of advertising later named among the top five slogans of the twentieth century and preserved in the Smithsonian. Putting that idea on a Vaporfly Next Percent 3 is a deliberate mismatch, because this is the fastest shoe Nike sells, built since 2017 around ZoomX foam and a full length carbon fibre plate. Even the elite end starts in the dark.
Two uses. One, goal race: a half marathon or marathon run at target pace, with thin socks, and a heel lock lacing so your foot stays put on the platform. Two, two or three sharpening sessions in the last fortnight before the race so the plate feels normal underfoot. Avoid using them for easy morning kilometres despite the name, because the foam's best mileage is finite. Post race, knock the grit out of the outsole, wipe the upper with a damp cloth, dry in shade with the insoles out, and store them flat rather than crushed under other shoes. Keep the box, because it is the best storage this shoe gets.
Nike's oldest argument is that ordinary people running alone are doing something worth taking seriously, an argument made first through Steve Prefontaine as the brand's first track endorser and then, in 1988, through an eighty year old man on a bridge. The Vaporfly changed what the other end of that spectrum looks like, forcing World Athletics to write rules about sole thickness, plate count and retail availability in January 2020. A pack themed on early mornings connects the two ends deliberately: the same technology that reorganised elite marathoning is sold to someone setting an alarm for five.
Everything about this shoe is aimed at race pace. ZoomX is Nike's altered Pebax foam, the lightest and most responsive in the range, and a full length carbon fibre plate runs through the midsole to add spring to each step. Peer research found the platform could improve marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. What that costs you is longevity and stability: racing foam degrades faster than training foam, and the tall responsive platform is unforgiving of slow, sloppy running. World Athletics rules from 31 January 2020 cap sole thickness at 40mm with one rigid plate, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal for competition.
