Culture Note™
Released on 10 July 2023 and part of Nike's ZoomX VaporFly Next% 3 line. This release has a flyknit upper in White/Jade Ice/Clear Jade/Deep Jungle. White with Jade Ice is the cool, clinical face of the Vaporfly, a colourway that looks like laboratory equipment rather than a costume, which suits a shoe that is essentially applied physics. The model that started it launched in 2017, combining ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate, and peer research credited it with improving marathon times by up to 4.2 percent. The Next% 3 carries that platform forward. Nike has been chasing this outcome since 1964, when Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight founded Blue Ribbon Sports on the belief that American runners deserved lighter shoes, and this is what six decades of pursuing that single idea eventually produced.
Race day: white or pale kit with one cool accent, letting Jade Ice tie to a cap or arm sleeve, and avoid heavy patterns since this shoe already carries a distinctive silhouette. Second: use it for a single race pace rehearsal in the final fortnight so the plate feels familiar rather than novel on the day. Keep it out of your daily rotation, since ZoomX gives up responsiveness faster than a trainer foam and mileage spent here is mileage taken off a race. Size to your usual Nike race fit, snug with toes clear of the front. Clean with cool water and a soft brush only, air dry in shade, never machine wash.
Super shoes changed how marathon results are discussed, and Nike absorbed that scrutiny because it has been the sport's dominant sponsor for decades, from Steve Prefontaine as its first endorsed track athlete through Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix. The rules written in 2020 were the sport's answer: not a ban, but limits on stack height, a single rigid plate and a requirement that any shoe raced in be available to buy. That is a rare case of a company's product forcing a governing body to define fairness, and it is the clearest evidence of how far Nike's engineering reaches beyond its own catalogue.
The midsole is the shoe. ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam and the lightest and most responsive compound in its range, is stacked tall and built around a full length carbon fibre plate that stiffens the ride and levers you through toe off. Above it sits a translucent engineered weave upper with almost no overlay, so the Jade Ice tone shows through as a wash rather than a block, and the white base makes the plate line at the sidewall easy to read. World Athletics rules from 31 January 2020 cap competition sole thickness at 40mm and allow one rigid plate, and compliant Vaporfly models remain legal. Pale race uppers stain permanently, so keep them for dry courses.
