Origin
Part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Footwear White/Silver Metallic/Grey One. White with silver metallic grey is the Samba treated as jewellery rather than as footwear. Metallic finishes behave differently from flat colour: they change with the light, going almost white in daylight and reading as a hard grey indoors, which gives a completely static silhouette something that moves. Cut on the women's last, this is a version of the shoe aimed at evenings and dressing up rather than at weekends. adidas has run this play across its archive for years, taking a shape everybody can identify at a glance and changing only the surface treatment to move it into a different part of the wardrobe.
Utility
Metallic reads best against matte fabric. Wear it with a black slip skirt and a plain knit so the stripes catch light on their own, or with cream tailored trousers and a white shirt for daytime, where the silver stays subtle. adidas built the modern designer sneaker partnership, working with Stella McCartney since 2004 and with Yohji Yamamoto on Y-3, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, alongside music collaborators including Beyonce and Bad Bunny. That programme is what made it normal to treat a sports silhouette as a fashion object with its own finishes and proportions. Metallic Originals product descends directly from it. The Trefoil, three leaves over three stripes, was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics and now marks exactly this kind of release.
Construction
A white leather upper with a suede overlay at the toe and Three Stripes applied in a silver metallic finish along the quarter panel, over the low flat outsole this shape has always used. Metallic surfaces are the least durable finish adidas puts on this shoe: the coating scuffs where flat leather would only mark, and once it lifts it cannot be restored. Treat the stripes as the fragile part and the white leather as the part that simply needs regular cleaning. The women's last runs narrow and long, and there is no cushioning underfoot, so the shoe stays low, close and better suited to evenings than to all day standing.
