Released on 8 November 2023 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a fur upper in Cream White/Mystery Brown/Cream White. Wales Bonner's adidas work is the most disciplined collaboration in the brand's current archive: the shoes are quiet, the materials are elevated, and the changes are mostly about texture and proportion rather than logo play. The Samba Pony in Cream White is that approach at its purest, a football training shoe rebuilt in pony-effect hair-on material and rendered in a single soft off-white so the surface is the whole story. The Samba began as a shoe for players on frozen pitches, and turning it into a textural object without altering its outline is exactly the kind of restraint the silhouette rewards.
Textured cream is a quiet luxury signal, so let it sit against plain fabric. First recipe: wide cream or stone trousers with an ecru knit, a full tonal build where the pile texture is the only variation. Second: dark brown or navy tailored trousers with a white shirt, where the pale shoe lifts the bottom of the outfit. This is a flat, narrow, lightly cushioned shoe for dry city days, not weather. Many people size up half a size. Wear thin socks, brush the pile in one direction after each wear, never wet-clean it, and store the pair out of direct sun to protect the cream tone.
adidas invented the modern designer sneaker partnership, starting with Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and the studios that followed inherited a system where the archive is genuinely open. That access is why an unaltered Samba outline can carry an entirely new material without looking like a gimmick. The shoe itself needed no help: with the Superstar and the Stan Smith it became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing, adopted rather than advertised, the same way adidas gained its music standing when Run-DMC recorded My Adidas unpaid in 1986.
Samba geometry underneath: a low narrow last, the T-shaped toe reinforcement, a thin footbed and a gum outsole made for pivoting, with the Three Stripes in their original stitched reinforcing position on the quarter panel. The pony-effect upper is a hair-on textured material rather than plain leather or suede, which changes maintenance completely. Brush it gently and always in the direction of the pile, never against it, and never soak it, since water flattens and matts textured hair-on surfaces permanently. Cream white shows everything, so protect before first wear and clean little and often. Keep the gum sidewall clean before grey sets in.
