Origin
Released on 1 July 2024 and part of the SL72 line. This release has a suede upper in Blue/Bright Red/Royal Blue. The SL72 belongs to the era when adidas was designing for the Munich Olympics, the same moment that produced the Trefoil, three leaves over three stripes, launched in 1972 and carried by the brand until 1997. It is a nylon and suede runner from the years when running shoes were still light, narrow and built for the track rather than for cushioning, and the RS is the reworked modern version of that outline. Blue Bright Red is a period correct pairing: a blue upper cut with a hard, saturated red, colours chosen for a stadium camera rather than for a wardrobe. Seventies running shoes were never subtle.
Utility
Bright seventies colour needs plain clothing around it. Recipe one: mid blue straight leg denim and a plain white tee, where the blue upper ties to the jeans and the red stripe is the only accent in the outfit. Recipe two: navy track pants with a white or cream crew, keeping it in a sportswear register and letting the shoe look like it came from the right decade. Good for daytime, weekends and warm weather since a nylon upper breathes better than leather. The SL72 last runs narrow and low volume, so consider half a size up if your foot is wide. Wipe the nylon with a damp cloth and brush the suede panels separately.
Influence
adidas has kept remaking this era because it worked twice. The first time was sport, when adidas racing product was on athletes at the highest level, a line that runs from Jesse Owens wearing Dassler handmade spikes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics through the Munich Games. The second was culture, when adidas Originals became the base layer of European terrace and casual dressing and lightweight seventies runners became the connoisseur's alternative to the Superstar. In more recent years adidas has kept feeding that audience through music collaborators, from Run-DMC through Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and an Original Forever collection with Oasis.
Construction
The SL72 is a layered shoe: a light nylon body with suede panels at the toe, the eyestay and the heel, which is how running shoes of that era got structure without weight. The Three Stripes run the flank in suede, stitched rather than applied, the same construction adidas has used since it bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 when the stripes reinforced the upper. Underneath sits a thin wedge sole with a low profile and a modest heel lift. Nylon is the panel that wipes clean easily, suede is the panel that needs a brush, and on this colourway the red trim is where wear will show first.
