Culture Note™
Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 1 March 2021 as part of the Stan Smith line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Cloud White/Green. White with Green is the Stan Smith as originally understood, the version everything else is a variation on. It is a plain white leather tennis shoe with the Three Stripes perforated rather than stitched, and a green heel tab that is the only colour anywhere on it. That restraint is why it worked. Alongside the Superstar it became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and adidas Originals was built on those two shoes more than on any single campaign. Buying this colourway is buying the default: no pack story, no collaborator, no reissue proportions, just the shape that made a sneaker acceptable in rooms where sneakers previously were not.
This colourway's job is to go with everything, so use it that way. Recipe one: dark straight jeans, a white tee and a navy jacket, invisible socks, which is the outfit the shoe was effectively designed for. Recipe two: grey flannel trousers with a light blue shirt and no tie, where a clean white leather sneaker replaces a loafer without looking like a compromise. White leather is easy to keep and hard to rescue, so wipe it down every few wears with a damp cloth and mild soap rather than waiting for a full clean. Condition the leather occasionally to slow cracking at the crease lines, and keep it out of standing monsoon water.
The Stan Smith travelled further from sport than almost anything adidas has made. Where the Superstar's second life came through music, arriving when Run-DMC released My Adidas unpaid in 1986 and the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company followed, the Stan Smith's second life came through ubiquity. It went into art schools, offices, galleries and airports and replaced shoes that used to require polish. adidas Originals, marked by the Trefoil designed in 1971 for the 1972 Munich Olympics, exists largely because of that adoption. The white and green pair is the shoe in its native state, which is why it is still the one people default to.
The build is a smooth leather upper on a flat rubber cupsole, with the Three Stripe banding punched through the quarter as perforations instead of applied as panels. That single decision is the most restrained use of a mark adidas bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 and normally stitches on for reinforcement, and it is what lets the shoe pass as a plain leather shoe at a glance. The green heel tab and the tonal green accents give the eye its only fixed point. Smooth leather creases hard across the toe box early and keeps those creases permanently, so how the shoe ages is decided in the first month of wear rather than over years.
