Origin
Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 6 February 2025 as part of adidas's Superstar line. This release has a leather upper in Core Black/Cloud White/Core Black. No adidas shoe has a bigger second life than this one. The Superstar arrived in 1969 as a low-top version of the Pro Model with a moulded rubber shell toe, designed to protect players' feet under the basket, and by 1973 it was reportedly on more than 75 percent of NBA players, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and George Gervin among the early adopters. Then it left the court entirely. The Superstar 2 is the modern reworking of that shape, and Black with White is its most direct colourway: dark leather body, white shell toe, white stripes, maximum contrast on the detail everyone recognises. In 2015 alone adidas sold over 15 million pairs of Superstars, its best selling shoe that year.
Utility
Two recipes. Straight-leg black jeans with a white tee and a black bomber, so the shell toe is the only bright break in the outfit. Or grey sweatpants with an oversized black hoodie, the plainest possible frame for a shoe that does not need help. It works in almost any casual context and survives weather better than suede silhouettes. Size true; the Superstar last is on the wider side. Clean the shell toe with a damp cloth and it looks new again, wipe the leather regularly, and keep the laces white or swap them rather than trying to bleach them back.
Influence
The Superstar's second act is the most important cultural moment in adidas history and the company did not pay for it. Run-DMC released My Adidas on 29 May 1986, and on 19 July that year at Madison Square Garden, with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio in the crowd at Lyor Cohen's invitation, the group told the audience to hold up their shell toes and thousands did. The deal that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, and Questlove has called it hip hop's tipping point. Everything about music and brand partnership since runs through that night.
Construction
A leather upper with the moulded rubber shell toe that gives the silhouette its name, three stripes running the quarter panel and a rubber cupsole underneath. The shell toe is the most copied construction detail adidas has ever produced, and it exists for a functional reason: it took the abuse a basketball player's toe took. On a black upper with a white shell, the toe cap is the loudest element of the shoe and also the part that scuffs first, though rubber cleans up far more easily than leather does. Expect a firm, structured fit that softens through the forefoot as the leather gives.
