adidas Superstar Bape ABC Camo Green
adidas Superstar Bape ABC Camo Green
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Horst Dassler and released on 8 May 2021 as part of adidas's Superstar line. This release has a leather upper. This is the single most consequential adidas silhouette handed to one of streetwear's most recognisable graphics. The Superstar launched in 1969 as a low top with a moulded rubber shell toe made to protect players' feet under the basket, and by 1973 it was reportedly worn by more than 75 percent of NBA players. Bape's ABC camo is the pattern that made the label identifiable at a glance, and putting it in green across a Superstar upper produces a shoe where both parties are legible from across a street. adidas sold over 15 million pairs of Superstars in 2015 alone, so a camo version is not reinterpreting an obscure model. It is writing on the most public surface the company has.
Utility
Camo needs a plain frame or it turns into costume. Recipe one: black straight leg denim with a plain black hoodie, so the pattern is the only busy element from the ankle up. Recipe two: olive or khaki work trousers with a white heavyweight tee, pulling the green out of the camo without matching it exactly. Superstar lasts run wide and long, so a half size down is usually right and thin socks help. The shell toe is the most durable part of the shoe and the white midsole the least, so clean the sole with a melamine sponge and mild soap. Spot clean printed camo rather than scrubbing it, because abrasion lifts print faster than it lifts dirt.
Influence
The Superstar is the shoe that gave adidas a second life it did not design. Hip hop adopted it wholesale, and Run-DMC released My Adidas unpaid on Raising Hell before, at Madison Square Garden with adidas executive Angelo Anastasio in the crowd at Lyor Cohen's invitation, telling thousands of people to hold their shell toes in the air. The endorsement that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, and Questlove has called it hip hop's tipping point. Every streetwear collaboration on this silhouette is trading on that moment, and a camo Superstar makes the debt explicit rather than pretending it is a design exercise.
Construction
The Superstar's defining element is the shell toe, a moulded rubber cap that was engineering before it was styling, and it is the part collaborations almost never touch because removing it removes the shoe. Above it, the upper carries the ABC camo in green as a printed or panelled treatment across leather or canvas, with the Three Stripes running through the sidewall where they hold the panels together, a structural role the mark has had since adidas bought it from Karhu Sports in 1952. A rubber cupsole with a herringbone tread carries the base. Camo across a shoe hides scuffing well on the upper while the white shell toe and midsole show every mark, which is the usual Superstar maintenance problem.
