Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 January 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Neutral Grey/Hyper Crimson-White-Black. Hyper Crimson is an Air Jordan 1 High built on the original tooling and coloured in a shade the 1985 palette never had access to. When Nike signed a Chicago Bulls rookie on 26 October 1984, it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face; the shoe Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore released on 1 April 1985 and sold out its initial 50,000 pairs. Everything since has been variation. A hyper crimson, a hot orange leaning red, sits at the loud end of that variation, using the shape's authority to carry a colour that would never have been approved as team kit.
Utility
Hot orange red wants a cold outfit. First: black straight leg denim with a break at the collar, a black tee, no other warm colour anywhere. Second: mid grey sweatpants cuffed above the collar with a grey hoodie, letting the shoe sit as the single point of heat. Occasion is daytime and social; the High reads better with a hem that sits on or above the collar so the ankle shape is visible. Fit is true to size with a narrow midfoot and a collar that needs breaking in. Care: protector spray before first wear, damp cloth only, soft brush for the perforations, and store out of direct sun since bright dyes fade fastest.
Influence
The 1 High is where the Banned advertising lives. The NBA's uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine, and Nike chose to pay rather than redesign, building a campaign out of the conflict. That decision taught the sneaker market that transgression sells and it is why a bright, non compliant colour on this shape still reads as intent. Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, gave the shoe a voice, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z kept it in the culture.
Construction
The High keeps the full 1 architecture: leather panels, wing tip toe with perforations, separate eyestay, stitched Swoosh, a high collar carrying the Wings mark that identifies the earliest era of the line, and a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle at the ball of the foot. The High collar is the part people underestimate; it holds the ankle and needs a few wears before it stops fighting you. Bright orange red leather is prone to showing crease shadows across the toe, and it is the colour family most likely to lift if you clean it with soap rather than a dedicated leather cleaner.
