Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 July 2023 as part of the AJKO line. This release has a satin upper in Black/Field Purple/White. The KO is the canvas reading of the Air Jordan 1 High, a build that keeps Peter Moore's panel map and swaps the leather for cloth. That change does more than save money: canvas moves differently, softens faster and sits closer to the foot, so the same outline reads casual rather than athletic. In black with field purple, the shoe leans further from sport again, because neither colour connects to Chicago red, black and white, the palette that works as house identity alongside the number 23. This is the first model reinterpreted as a wearing shoe rather than a display piece, and canvas is the most honest way the line has found to do that.
Recipe one, dark and soft: black wide leg trousers, a charcoal knit and a purple flecked scarf or beanie repeating the accent once. Recipe two, denim: black or grey jeans stacked lightly over the collar, a white tee and a chore jacket, letting the canvas texture read against heavier fabric. Occasion is street, gigs, dry weather; canvas and rain are a poor match. Fit is standard length, and canvas gives more than leather does, so avoid sizing up. Care: spray a fabric protector before the first wear, brush dry dirt rather than wetting the panels, spot clean with mild soap, and air dry slowly away from heat so the canvas does not shrink or stiffen.
The Air Jordan 1 high is the shape the Banned advertising made famous, built on the NBA's uniform rule and Nike's decision to pay the fine rather than redesign, and it carried into culture through Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon and through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z. Canvas versions occupy a specific place in that story: the same silhouette in a material with no performance claim, which is what the model has effectively become for almost everyone who owns one now. Purple on black is that admission made stylish, a basketball shape in colours no basketball team would issue.
A canvas upper across the toe, quarter and collar with the panel divisions of the original, purple detailing on the Swoosh and branding, on a midsole and rubber outsole. Canvas breaks in fast, moulds to the foot within a few wears and creases softly rather than sharply, which is the main reason people prefer the KO to a leather high for daily use. It also absorbs water and stains rather than shedding them, so a fabric protector before first wear is worth more here than on any leather 1. Underneath, this is still the first model, which came before the Nike Air cushioning the line adopted with the second shoe: firm and flat.
