Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 12 December 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black. Cut the Air Jordan 1 down to a low and you strip it of the thing it was originally sold on, the ankle collar of a basketball shoe, and you find out how much of the design was in the outline. Quite a lot, it turns out. Peter Moore's 1985 shape survives the cut: the same panel breaks, the same wing logo placement, the same relationship between swoosh and quarter. In black, the low becomes the least ceremonial Jordan you can buy, a shoe that reads as footwear rather than as an artefact. That is a useful position for a model whose original pairs now trade around 20,000 dollars, because it means at least one version of the 1 is still just a shoe you put on.
Utility
Two recipes. First, black slim trousers with a white oxford shirt, using the low's short profile to keep the outfit clean at the ankle in a way no high top manages. Second, faded black denim with a grey overshirt, where the shoe grounds a washed out palette. Lows suit warm weather, ankle socks and wide feet better than the high does. Size true to length; if you are between sizes the low is the one Jordan where going down is defensible. Wipe with a damp cloth, use a magic eraser only on the midsole rubber and never on the upper, and rotate with another pair so the foam recovers.
Influence
The Air Jordan 1 is the shoe that created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and the resale market that grew around it has been valued at roughly two billion dollars. It carries a darker history too, one the brand does not hide: in the late 1980s the shoes were linked to robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them outright. That is part of why the silhouette still reads as charged rather than neutral. A plain black low is the quiet end of that story, the version of a shoe with a very loud past that you can wear to work without announcing anything at all.
Construction
The low cut removes the collar padding and the top eyelet row, which changes the fit more than people expect: your heel sits lower, the shoe flexes further at the toe, and the lacing has less range to compensate for a wide or narrow foot. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model and remains underfoot here. An all black upper is the most practical finish Jordan makes, because scuffs, dust and rain marks all vanish into it, while the midsole becomes the only part that shows age. Creasing across the vamp is guaranteed on a low and is not a defect. Keep the lower eyelets slightly slack, clean the sole separately, and avoid heat drying.
