    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 April 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Cement Grey/White/Fire Red. This colourway is a conversation between two eras of the same line. Black, cement grey and fire red belong to the Air Jordan 3, the model Tinker Hatfield took over after Peter Moore's original, and the shoe that introduced the elephant print and put the Jumpman on the tongue. Dropping that palette onto the Air Jordan 1 Low pulls a later design language back onto the shape that started everything. It works because the 1 was always a colour blocking exercise: separate leather panels, hard edges, no gradients. Fire red on the Swoosh and heel does the shouting, cement grey handles the mid tones, and black holds the base. You are wearing a reference that most people will read instantly without needing the model number explained.
Recipe one: raw indigo jeans with a heavy break, a black hooded sweatshirt, and a grey wool overshirt, so the fire red hits reads as the only accent in the fit. Recipe two: black cargo trousers cuffed once, a washed grey tee and a leather bomber, with the red on the shoe answering nothing else. This is a weekend and travel shoe, comfortable through airports and long walking days, and the low collar means it will not fight a cropped trouser. Try a half size up if you have a wide forefoot. Keep the cement grey panels clean with a dry brush first, then a damp cloth, and never machine wash them, since heat and water accelerate the breakdown of ageing midsole foam.
From the Air Jordan 3 onward the line stopped being a signature shoe and became a design series with its own vocabulary, and cement grey is one of its most durable codes. That vocabulary is why the brand could survive its athlete: Jordan Brand became a standalone division inside Nike in 1997 and by 2022 was generating about 5.1 billion dollars, built on recognisable material and colour signatures rather than a single silhouette. Fire red and black also sit close to the palette Nike used when it turned the league's uniform rule into the Banned campaign, paying the fine rather than redesigning the shoe. Wearing this pair is wearing the house colours, one model displaced.
The Low is built the same way the high is, minus the collar height: layered leather panels stitched over a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole carrying the pivot circle. Here the three tone blocking gives the construction something to do, because each panel is a different colour and every seam becomes a line you can trace. Cement grey sits on the overlays where scuffing shows first, which is honest for a shoe that was designed to be dragged across hardwood. Black leather across the toe and quarter hides daily wear better than the pale colourways. Expect the upper to feel firm out of the box and to relax across the flex point within a couple of weeks, at which point the creasing pattern becomes yours.
