Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 4 October 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Light Graphite/Sail/Cement Grey. Inside Out is exactly what it says: the Air Jordan 1 Low built so that the construction normally hidden inside the shoe is turned outward and made the design. The 1985 pattern Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore has been reissued, recoloured and collaborated on for four decades, so reversing it is one of the few genuinely new things left to do with it. Craft is the brand's term for a stripped back, material led treatment, and in black the effect is subtle rather than shouted: you see raw edges, exposed stitching and unfinished linings only when you are close. Style code DN1635 001.
All black with texture is the most useful sneaker configuration there is. First: black wide leg trousers with the hem sitting on the collar, a black overshirt, silver hardware, so the shoe reads as texture in a monochrome outfit. Second: dark indigo denim with a single cuff and a cream knit, using the pale top half to make the raw edges visible. Occasion is everyday and evening, dry weather, since napped leather marks when wet. Fit is true to length with a narrow midfoot. Care: protector spray before first wear, suede brush in one direction, never wet clean, and leave the raw edges alone rather than trimming them.
The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, a market where deadstock condition is the currency, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and a resale ecosystem valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. A shoe that shows its seams argues with that logic, in the same spirit as the deconstruction work Jordan Brand has done with collaborators such as Off-White under Virgil Abloh. The shape's licence to be taken apart comes from the Banned advertising, built on the NBA's uniform rule and Nike's willingness to pay the fine rather than conform.
The panel map is the standard Low, wing tip toe, separate eyestay, stitched Swoosh and a low collar over a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle, but assembled so the reverse faces of the leather and the internal seam allowances read as the outer surface. That means a softer, more matte hand than a normal leather 1 and edges that are deliberately left raw. Practically, reversed leather behaves like a suede: it takes dirt into the nap rather than sitting on the surface, and it will not respond to the damp cloth that works on a standard pair. Treat it as a napped shoe from day one.
