Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 June 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White/Metallic Gold. The Air Jordan 1 is where the whole line starts: Peter Moore's design with Bruce Kilgore, produced for Michael Jordan in November 1984 and released to the public the following April, with Nike quietly hoping for about 3 million dollars over three years and watching the first 50,000 pairs vanish instead. This FlyEase build takes that silhouette and rebuilds the way you get into it, holding the low cut profile and dressing it in black with metallic gold. Gold is the shade Jordan Brand reserves for anniversary and honour makeups, and set against flat black it reads like trophy plating rather than flash. You are buying the original basketball shape with a different relationship to your hands: a shoe designed to be entered fast, by anyone, without help.
Two ways to run it. First, all black tailoring: black straight leg trousers, a black knit, and let the gold Swoosh be the only metal you wear, no chain, no watch. Second, a loose indigo jean with a cream crewneck and a black bomber, so the gold reads as hardware against denim rather than dress. The low cut sits under a trouser break cleanly, which is what makes this easier to dress than a high. Air Jordan 1s run long on many feet, so try your usual size against a half size down before committing. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth and dry it away from heat, keep abrasive cleaners off the gold, and stuff the toe box between wears so the crease stays shallow.
The Air Jordan 1 became a cultural object because of everything that surrounded it. Spike Lee directed Nike's advertising and played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, which put the shoe into film language, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put it into lyrics. The Banned campaign, built around the league's uniform rule and Nike's willingness to pay the fine per game, taught the market that transgression sells. What a FlyEase version adds to that history is reach: the same silhouette that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, opened up to people who cannot manage a traditional lace and collar. Black and gold stays quiet about it. Nothing on the shoe announces the adaptation.
Black leather carries the upper, keeping the Air Jordan 1's panelled build: toe box, quarter panel, collar, each separated by stitch lines you can read from across a room. Metallic gold sits on the Swoosh and the branding, a small amount of shine against a matte ground so the shoe stays wearable in daylight. The FlyEase system named on the shoe changes the entry rather than the silhouette, built so the shoe can be opened and secured without a long lace routine, which matters if you dress standing up, in a hurry, or with one hand. The low cut leaves the ankle free to move. Expect the leather to crease across the toe with wear, which is how this model has always aged.
