Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 January 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Sail/Blue Grey. GS means grade school sizing, which is where a large share of Air Jordan 1 Lows actually get worn. The colourway pairs a mocha brown with blue and grey, a combination that has nothing to do with the Chicago red, black and white the line built its identity on, and everything to do with the shoe functioning as general footwear. Peter Moore's 1985 pattern is underneath, cut with a separate toe, quarter and eyestay so three colours can sit together without turning muddy. On a smaller size run the panels compress and the colour blocking reads tighter, which is why multi tone makeups often look sharper in GS than they do in adult sizes.
Multi tone shoes work best with single tone clothing. Plain black or grey joggers with a solid tee lets all three colours read, or blue denim with a brown or cream sweat picks up two of the three without matching exactly. Skip graphic clothing, which competes with the colour blocking. Buy with a thumb width of growing room rather than sizing up a full step, since a loose low top slides at the heel and wears out the collar. Wipe the upper the same day it gets marked, never machine wash, and let it dry naturally so the midsole bond is not stressed by heat.
Kids sizing is not an afterthought in this line, it is how the recognition renews itself. The Air Jordan 1 turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and a resale market around it valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and none of that survives unless the next set of buyers grows up seeing the silhouette on their own feet. Jordan Brand has been a Nike division since 1997 with a full apparel and footwear range, and the GS run is where the shape gets handed forward rather than sold back.
Three colours across leather panels: mocha as the warm base, blue as the accent on the Swoosh or collar, grey mediating between them. Perforated toe box, foam midsole, rubber outsole, no ankle support. The build detail that matters most on a kids pair is the eyestay and heel, because young wearers step out of shoes without unlacing and that is what collapses the collar over time. Mocha is a forgiving base colour for school wear since it takes dust as tone rather than dirt, while the grey panel will be the first to look tired. A dry brush once a week keeps all three colours reading as separate.
