Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 October 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/White/Blue Tint/Rush Fuchsia. Sashiko is Japanese running stitch, a technique developed to reinforce and repair cloth that became decorative because the repair looked good. Putting it on an Air Jordan 1 Low is a craft argument rather than a colour story: instead of new panels, you get visible stitching holding a multi coloured upper together. It sits naturally in Jordan Brand's history of turning process into pattern, the same instinct that made elephant print, introduced on the Air Jordan III, a brand signal on its own. Peter Moore's original low slung panel layout survives underneath all of it, which is why the shoe still reads as a 1 at a glance.
A multi colour upper is a pattern, so treat it like one. Recipe one: raw indigo denim, a plain ecru tee, an unstructured natural linen jacket, letting the stitching be the only detail in play. Recipe two: black wide leg trousers, a black knit, nothing else patterned, so the shoe carries the entire visual load. Never pair it with a printed shirt. Best in dry weather and on smooth ground, since abrasion attacks stitching before it attacks leather. Size true, lace fully through the midfoot, brush after each wear, and store in a dust free space so thread does not catch. Repair small pulls early rather than living with them.
Jordan Brand's design programme has always been comfortable borrowing from outside sport, running collaborations through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. A craft technique treated as an upper is that same appetite applied without a partner name attached. The brand can do it because the 1 is fixed enough in culture to survive any treatment: it reached that status through the earliest era's Banned advertising and Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon films, then through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting Jordans into their lyrics. Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete and namesake.
The stitching is the construction and the graphic at once, which is the whole appeal. Multi colour panels meeting under visible thread means the seams are meant to be looked at rather than hidden, so this is a shoe that rewards close inspection and punishes rough wear: a pulled thread is a visible fault, not a scuff. Nike Air cushioning, in the line since the Air Jordan II, sits below the low cut. Care accordingly. Brush dry rather than scrubbing, never machine wash, and treat any loose stitch immediately before it runs. Lace firmly through the midfoot, since the dropped collar leaves the ankle unsupported.
