Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Dark Beetroot/Roma Green/White/Black. Dark Beetroot is a deep, bruised red purple, and it lands on the grade school Low SE, which is one of the more interesting places this line puts a serious colour. The Air Jordan 1 began as a 1984 contract with a Chicago Bulls rookie and a modest sales target of about 3 million dollars over three years. It sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars instead, and every colourway since has been paid for by that miscalculation. A beetroot Low for younger feet is what abundance looks like: the founding shape, the founding proportions, and a tone that answers to fashion rather than to a team sheet.
Two recipes. Tonal: black jeans with a burgundy or maroon crew, so the beetroot has a partner and reads as a considered choice. Or brighten around it: grey sweats and a white tee, where the deep red is the only saturated element in the fit. Beetroot clashes with orange and bright red, so keep those out. Lows want the hem at the ankle. Grade school sizing runs close to true, with width the thing to check. Clean the light base separately from the coloured panels so pigment does not travel, brush before wiping, and dry at room temperature rather than near heat.
This is the shoe that turned sneakers into an asset class. Original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, and the resale market the model anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars with several billion more projected, which means a grade school Low is sold into a world where footwear carries a price history the way a stock does. That is a strange inheritance for a children's size run. The useful part is what it says about the design: nothing stays valuable for four decades by accident, and the beetroot pair is standing on proportions that have been tested harder than almost any object in sport.
Leather panels in dark beetroot with a lighter base, on the grade school Low pattern, over the flat stitched rubber cupsole this silhouette has always used. Deep reds and purples are the most practical saturated colours on this shoe, since they hide street dirt far better than pale tones and hold their intensity longer in sunlight than bright reds. Junior builds mirror the adult architecture rather than simplifying it, so the break in behaves the same way: stiff for a week, then a crease across the toe box that settles into the shape of the wearer's stride and stays there.
