    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 August 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Stealth/White/French Blue. The Air Jordan 1 came off Peter Moore's board with Bruce Kilgore, built for a Chicago Bulls rookie Nike had signed on 26 October 1984 to a six year deal worth 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other contract in the league, with a royalty attached. The shoe was produced for Jordan on 17 November 1984 and reached the public on 1 April 1985, where the initial 50,000 pairs sold out. The Low cut is the everyday reading of that silhouette, and Stealth French Blue White is its quietest version. Grey carries the body, a cool washed blue takes the Swoosh and collar, white sits where the original ran Chicago red. The panel map, the Wings mark on the collar and the perforated toe box all survive the drop to ankle height.
Two ways to run it. First, straight indigo denim with a hard cuff, a white tee and a grey overshirt, letting the French Blue answer the denim rather than compete with it. Second, charcoal wool trousers with a break at the ankle and a navy knit, where the grey upper reads as part of the tailoring and only the Swoosh gives it away. This is a walk all day shoe, not a court shoe, so size to your usual sneaker length and expect a snug midfoot that opens up once the leather takes your shape. Brush the toe box, wipe the midsole before scuffs set, and keep the leather away from prolonged rain since perforations let water in as easily as air.
Air Jordan reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop rather than through basketball alone. Nike put Spike Lee on screen as Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan in the earliest advertising, which moved the shoe into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z wrote Jordans into their records. That is why a muted grey and blue Low still carries weight it did not earn on court: the silhouette became legible far outside the game. It is also the shoe that turned collecting into a mass activity, anchoring a resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars. In this colourway you get the outline without the volume, which is exactly the point.
Leather does the work here, cut into the separate toe, quarter, eyestay and collar panels the 1985 pattern established, which is why the French Blue reads as a clean block against the grey rather than bleeding into it. The toe box keeps its perforations, a leftover from a shoe that once had to breathe through a full basketball game. Underneath sits a foam midsole over a rubber cupsole, and with the collar dropped the shoe flexes at the ankle instead of bracing it. What Jordan Brand's material habit means for you day to day is honest leather: it creases into a pattern specific to how you walk, the blue panels deepen slightly, and the white midsole takes scuffs before anything else does.
