Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 5 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Royal Blue/Black/White. Black and royal blue is one of the oldest colour arguments in the Air Jordan 1 catalogue, and it predates most of what the shoe is now famous for. The 1 was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, released to the public on 1 April 1985 after debuting on Jordan the previous November, and its earliest run of colourways was built on hard two tone blocking rather than the graphics the line picked up later. This Mid takes that blocking logic and applies it to the in between height, where the collar gives you a little structure and the swoosh panel gives the blue somewhere to land. It is a straightforward shoe with a long memory behind it, which is the most durable thing a sneaker can be.
Two recipes. First, black straight leg jeans with a royal blue crewneck, matching the accent up top so the shoe looks like part of a plan. Second, grey sweatpants with a plain black tee, where the blue is the only colour in the outfit and does not need any support. The Mid is the Air Jordan 1 you can wear in poor weather with least anxiety because the black hides most of what a wet pavement does. Size true to length with a snug instep. Loosen the top two eyelets if the collar rubs, wipe the upper with a damp cloth and mild soap, and dry it slowly away from direct heat.
Air Jordan's cultural reach came from basketball meeting hip hop. Spike Lee directed Nike's early campaigns and played Mars Blackmon in them, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all wrote Jordan into their records. The Banned advertising, built around a uniform rule that required at least 51 percent white and the 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike simply paid, taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. Hard two tone colourways like this one are the direct descendants of that period, when a Jordan announced itself by refusing the league's palette. The shoe still reads that way on a street, which is why the colour survives.
The Mid height sits above the ankle bone without the full collar of the high top, which is why it fits under a trouser hem more easily than an OG high ever will. Nike Air cushioning has been in the signature line since the second model and gives the 1 a firmer, more supportive ride than a flat court shoe. Black across the majority of the upper is the practical choice here: it takes scuffing, road dust and rain without showing much, and it makes the royal blue panelling read brighter than the same blue would against white. The midsole is where dirt will show, so clean it separately with a soft brush. Expect toe box creasing from the first week and let it happen rather than fighting it.
