Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 July 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Anthracite/Sky J Light Olive/Black. Craft is the label Jordan Brand uses when it wants a shoe to look made rather than designed: textured surfaces, muted tones and as little contrast blocking as it can get away with. On the Jordan 1 Mid in anthracite and light olive, that produces one of the quietest pairs the silhouette has worn. Both colours sit in the grey and green range that belongs to workwear and field gear rather than to any court palette, so the shoe reads as clothing from the first glance. The 1985 pattern is doing what it always does here, providing an outline familiar enough that texture and tone can carry the entire design.
Match the register, not the colour. Olive or charcoal trousers with a cream knit and a dark shell jacket gives the shoe a workwear context that suits the texture, which is exactly what it was drawn for. For a cleaner look, black straight leg trousers and a grey sweatshirt keeps everything muted and lets the surface do the talking. Avoid anything glossy or bright next to it. The Mid runs true to size and softens quickly. Brush the napped panels in one direction, use a suede and fabric protector, keep the pair dry, and store it away from heat so the texture stays open rather than flattened.
This muted register exists because the Jordan 1 has been absorbed into fashion, a process pushed along by design partners including Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. The Jumpman is now a house mark, a silhouette Peter Moore had Jordan recreate in Bulls gear, and it carries a workwear palette as comfortably as it carries a team one. Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022 as a division rather than a single model, and Craft pairs are the part of that catalogue aimed at people who want the shoe without the announcement.
The Mid keeps the Jordan 1 panel layout with a collar between the High and the Low, the Wings mark at the ankle and a flat rubber cupsole with a firm ride, no visible Air, since that cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II onward. What separates a Craft build is the hand of the upper: matte and textured rather than polished, which changes how light falls across the panels and makes the seams read as shadow lines. Textured, napped surfaces need brushing rather than wiping, and they mark more visibly when wet. Keep the pair out of rain, brush in one direction after wear, and protect it before the first outing.
