Air Jordan 1 Mid SE Let(Her)Man
Air Jordan 1 Mid SE Let(Her)Man
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 25 October 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Metallic Gold/Gym Red/Black. The name is a pun with an argument inside it. A letterman jacket is the most gendered object in American school sport, an award for boys' teams that women's programmes spent decades being handed late or not at all, and rewriting it as Let(Her)Man puts that history on the side of a shoe. The Air Jordan 1 Mid is a sensible carrier for it, since the Mid is the height the brand uses when it wants to make a statement in materials rather than proportions. What you get is a varsity themed build on the silhouette Peter Moore drew in 1984, aimed at the half of the roster the original marketing never addressed.
Utility
Recipe one: straight leg blue jeans with a white tee and an actual varsity jacket, leaning fully into the reference rather than hedging it. Recipe two: black wide leg trousers with a grey sweatshirt and a navy peacoat, where the shoe's textile panels give the outfit its only texture. This is an autumn and winter shoe, and textile detailing means it should stay out of heavy rain. Fit runs true for most, half up for wide feet. Lint roll fabric panels rather than brushing them, spot clean with a barely damp cloth and no soap on wool or felt, dry naturally away from heat, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials degrade over time.
Influence
Jordan Brand's roster includes WNBA athletes Maya Moore and Jordin Canada, and the brand outfits college basketball programmes including North Carolina, Jordan's own university, plus Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. A varsity themed women's release sits exactly at the intersection of those two facts, which is why the wordplay lands rather than feeling bolted on. It also reflects how far the line travelled from 1984, when Nike's plan was to buy one young player's identity because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas. The brand now has enough standing to make a point about who gets a letter.
Construction
Varsity themed executions usually work in mixed materials, which suits a shoe assembled from separate cut panels in the first place: toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel stitched over one another on a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole and the forefoot pivot circle. The mid collar has ankle padding and clears the ankle bone, so it needs no break in. Where a build like this uses wool, felt, chenille or patch work alongside leather, those surfaces behave differently from a plain hide: they hold water, they attract lint, and they cannot be scrubbed. Treat any textile panels as clothing rather than as footwear and the shoe will keep its intent much longer.
