Air Jordan 1 Mid SE Satin Smoke Grey
Air Jordan 1 Mid SE Satin Smoke Grey
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a satin upper in Black/Sail/Smoke Grey. Satin on a basketball shoe is not a novelty in this line, it is a tradition. The Air Jordan XI put patent leather on a court shoe, a formal wear material dropped into performance basketball, and it is the reason that model gets worn with suits to this day. A satin smoke grey Air Jordan 1 Mid is the same instinct applied to the original silhouette: take the outline Peter Moore drew for a Bulls rookie in 1984 and finish it in a material that belongs to evening wear. Smoke grey keeps the sheen from tipping into costume. It is one of the more genuinely elegant things the brand does with its founding shape.
Utility
Satin wants to be seen at night. Black tailored trousers with a silk or satin top puts the shoe in the same material conversation as the rest of the outfit rather than sitting apart from it. The second recipe dresses it down deliberately: dark straight jeans, a grey knit, the sheen doing the work of jewellery. Avoid rough denim hems that rub the collar, and avoid rain entirely, since water spotting on satin is often permanent. Lace loosely so the eyelet rows do not pull the fabric. Keep it in a dust bag, handle by the sole rather than the upper, and never use a stiff brush.
Influence
The Air Jordan XI proved that a basketball shoe could be dressed up, and the market has been testing that boundary ever since through collaborations with Dior, Off-White under Virgil Abloh and Comme des Garcons, all of which treated these silhouettes as fashion objects rather than sports equipment. Satin belongs to that lineage. It is also the register in which Jordan Brand has built a lot of its women's product, alongside signed athletes including Maya Moore and Jordin Canada and artist collaborators including Billie Eilish and Nicki Minaj. A smoke grey satin Mid is a going out shoe with a hardwood pedigree.
Construction
Satin behaves completely differently from leather and you should buy it knowing that. It catches light across the whole panel rather than at the edges, which makes the Air Jordan 1's curves far more visible than a matte finish does, and it shows every mark, snag and water spot. Smoke grey mutes the shine to something wearable rather than reflective. The Mid collar folds forward with wear, and satin creases into that fold with a sharper line than leather. Nike Air cushioning has run through this line since the Air Jordan II. Never scrub satin. Blot, use minimal moisture, keep it away from rough surfaces and velcro, and store it in a bag inside the box.
