Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 April 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Coconut Milk/Sail/Legend Pink. Seersucker is a summer cloth from tailoring, puckered so it holds away from the skin, and putting it on an Air Jordan 1 Mid is the kind of move the brand only earned the right to make after the 1 stopped being a basketball shoe. The line's material history runs through Tinker Hatfield's work from the Air Jordan 3 onward: elephant print as a recognisable code, patent leather on the 11 bringing formal wear material onto a court. Seersucker continues that argument from the opposite direction, taking a warm weather suiting fabric and stitching it onto a silhouette drawn in 1984 for hardwood. The result is a Jordan that reads seasonal rather than archival.
Lean into the tailoring reference. Stone cotton trousers with a white linen shirt makes the seersucker look intentional and reads correctly in heat. Second option: mid blue denim shorts with a navy polo, where the cloth keeps the fit from feeling too plain. Avoid wearing an actual seersucker garment with them, and avoid heavy winter fabrics, which make the shoe look out of season. Thin cotton socks suit it. Keep them off wet ground, because a woven upper dries with tide marks, and store them stuffed with paper so the fabric does not collapse across the toe.
The reason a suiting fabric on a Jordan does not look like a costume is the run of fashion partnerships the brand has built: Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. Those relationships moved the 1 into a register where tailoring materials are legitimate, the same way patent leather did on the 11 and made that model the one people wear with suits. Underneath it all sits the original credibility, built through Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, the Banned campaign and hip hop, which is what stops any of this from reading as a novelty.
Woven cloth changes how the shoe behaves. Seersucker panels are lighter and more breathable than leather, and the pucker in the weave means the shoe looks textured even in a single colour, but fabric absorbs water and stains where leather sheds them. The underlying structure is unchanged: separately stitched toe cap, eyestay, quarter and Swoosh, a padded mid height collar, and a flat rubber cupsole with no air window, since Nike Air entered the range at the Air Jordan 2. Spray with a fabric protector before first wear, clean by dabbing with a damp cloth rather than brushing hard, and never put these near a washing machine.
