Designed by Peter Moore and released on 10 November 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Sesame/Fire Red/Multi-Color. Tartan Swoosh is a special edition Mid that swaps the shoe's most recognisable panel for woven check, which is a small change with a large effect. The Swoosh on the Air Jordan 1 has always been a separate stitched piece rather than a print, so it is the easiest place on the shoe to change material without redrawing anything. Jordan Brand has a long habit of doing exactly that, running texture experiments across the 1 while leaving the Peter Moore geometry alone. Tartan brings a heritage cloth reference into a silhouette built for a basketball court in 1985, and on the Mid, the everyday cut of the model, it lands as a detail you notice second rather than first.
Utility
Play to the cloth. Charcoal wool trousers, a plain black knit and a wool overcoat treats the tartan as tailoring rather than sportswear, which is the more interesting read. For a casual version, raw denim and a heavy flannel shirt in a muted check picks up the Swoosh without matching it directly. Never wear an actual tartan garment with these; two checks fight. The Mid collar sits below a cuffed hem cleanly. Fabric panels behave differently from leather, absorbing rather than repelling, so the Swoosh is the part to protect. Underfoot is a flat rubber cupsole, the 1 predating the arrival of Nike Air in the line at the Air Jordan 2. The toe box carries the usual perforations.
