The Air Jordan 1 is Peter Moore's shoe, drawn with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike had signed in October 1984 mainly to buy a young player's identity rather than a superstar's. Everything the model does since then is a variation on that first outline. Split Beach Cherrywood Red is one of the more literal variations: the upper is cut so the two halves of the shoe disagree, a sandy beach tone set against a deep cherrywood red, the mismatch treated as the design rather than an error. On a Mid, where the collar sits high enough to read but low enough to wear under a trouser, the split becomes the whole point. You are getting the AJ1's simplest asset, flat panels of colour, pushed as far as the pattern will allow.
Let the red lead. Recipe one: black straight leg jeans, a cream tee, and a cherry or burgundy piece somewhere up top so the split reads deliberate. Recipe two: sand or stone chinos with a cropped hem, a white oxford, and the beach half picked up by the trouser so the red does the shouting alone. Avoid a third strong colour anywhere in the fit, because a split upper is already doing two jobs. The Mid collar wants a hem that sits just above it, not on it. Wear these for daytime and long walking, not for rain, and clean the light side after every outing rather than every few.
Air Jordan reached culture through the collision of basketball and hip hop. Nike's advertising put the shoe into film language with Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z wrote Jordan and his sneakers into their records. That is the reason a two tone AJ1 still carries meaning that has nothing to do with basketball. Split colourways in particular belong to the era after 1997, when Jordan Brand became a standalone division inside Nike with its own apparel and collaborations and the AJ1 was free to be treated as a canvas rather than a piece of equipment.
The AJ1 has always been a leather shoe built on a cupsole, and that is what carries a split make up. Flat leather panels take a hard colour break cleanly, which is why the beach and cherrywood halves stay crisp instead of muddying at the seam. The Mid adds a padded collar and the Wings mark that dates the earliest era of the line. Practically this is a firm shoe. It supports rather than cushions, it needs a wear or two before the toe box creases where it wants to, and the pale beach half is the panel that ages first. Condition the light leather early, keep a soft brush for the midsole, and expect the red to hold colour far longer than the sand does.
