Air Jordan 1 Retro High 85 OG Black White Panda
Air Jordan 1 Retro High 85 OG Black White Panda
Culture Note™️
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 February 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Summit White. Black and white was one of the original 1985 Air Jordan 1 colourways, and it had not returned as a retro since 2014. The Air Jordan 1 Retro High 85 OG Black White, the pair everyone calls Panda, is Jordan Brand rebuilding it on the 85 last: a shape worked to match the specs of what Michael Jordan actually laced up on court, not the modern retro mould you grew up buying. That means a higher cut collar, a wider toe box and thicker leather than a standard Retro High OG. Under style code BQ4422-001 you get the least decorated Jordan 1 possible, white leather, black overlays, no third colour anywhere on the shoe. Stripping it back that far is precisely what made the colourway worth reviving.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. Clean: black straight leg denim stacked slightly over the collar, a white tee, a black bomber, so the shoe stays the only pattern in the fit. Sharper: charcoal wide leg trousers cropped above the collar with an oversized white oxford untucked, which lets the high top read as structure, not sportswear. The 85 last runs true to size with a wider toe box and higher collar than the standard High OG, so stay on your usual Jordan 1 size; wide footers who normally go up half a size can stay true here. Budget two to three weeks before the ankle softens. Wipe the white leather after each wear, brush the midsole, dry away from heat, and if you buy the Air Jordan 1 85 OG Black White in India, keep them clear of monsoon damp.
Influence
Black and white on a Jordan 1 is the most quoted colour scheme in sneakers, borrowed since by luxury runners, skate brands and fast fashion alike, and this is the version that predates all of it. The return mattered because the colourway had been dormant for the better part of a decade, and because the 85 platform finally gave collectors the shape they had been asking Jordan Brand for since the retro programme started. Panda is a community nickname, not a Nike name, which tells you how far the two tone read has travelled into general vocabulary. The result is a shoe carrying genuine archive weight that still reads as plain, so it walks into any room without announcing its price.
Construction
A white leather base carries black leather overlays across the toe, eyestay, Swoosh and collar, and the leather is noticeably thicker than a standard Retro High OG because the 85 build chases the original spec rather than the modern one. A nylon tongue sits up front with a black Nike Air label instead of a Jumpman, the detail that dates this shoe correctly to the first year of the line. Mesh lining runs through the inside, which matters more here than usual because the collar is cut higher and traps more heat. The Wings logo is stamped across the ankle panel. A white midsole and black rubber outsole finish it. Expect real stiffness out of the box: thick leather takes weeks, not days.
