Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 2 September 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Metallic Gold/Palomino/Sail. Palomino names a horse coat, a warm tan with a lighter mane, and that is exactly how the colour is deployed across this Retro High OG: a rich brown on the overlays with a paler ground carrying it. The OG build holds the silhouette that reached the public on 1 April 1985, drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, the shoe that sold out its first fifty thousand pairs and pushed past a hundred and fifty million dollars in sales when Nike had modelled a fraction of that. Brown is one of the few palettes that makes the model look like footwear rather than sportswear. In grade school sizing, it is the version that reaches a younger wardrobe without any of the noise.
Utility
Recipe one, earth tones: ecru or khaki wide leg trousers, a cream knit and a brown suede jacket, so the shoe sits inside the family instead of standing outside it. Recipe two, indigo: dark straight jeans with a slight stack, a white tee and a navy overshirt, letting the tan be the only warm element. Occasion is daytime, autumn, campus, travel. Fit is grade school sizing, so check length, and a crew sock protects the ankle while the collar breaks in. Care: brush dry, condition tan leather lightly two or three times a year, treat before wet weather, and keep the off white panels clean, because contrast between the two tones is what makes this colourway work.
Influence
The high is the shape that carries the model's history: the Banned advertising, built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring at least fifty one percent white and Nike paying the five thousand dollar per game fine rather than redesigning; Spike Lee directing and playing Mars Blackmon; and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carrying the shoes through music. That is a lot of weight for a warm brown colourway to carry lightly, and it does, because brown reads as clothing first. Jordan Brand has been a standalone division of Nike since 1997 and by 2022 was generating around five point one billion dollars, which is the machinery behind a palette this considered.
Construction
Leather panels in tan and off white following the original toe, quarter, Swoosh and heel divisions, with the darker tone taking the overlays so the shoe reads warm from a distance and layered up close. The OG high collar is padded at the ankle and gives the model its upright posture. The first Air Jordan came before the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line with the second model, so the ride comes from a stitched cupsole and foam wedge, firm and flat, needing a week or two to settle.
