Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 September 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Midnight Navy/Black/White/Sail. Midnight Navy takes the shape Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore and swaps the Chicago red for a blue so deep it reads black in low light. The Air Jordan 1 exists because Nike was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and gambled on a rookie rather than a proven superstar, signing Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984 to a six year, 2.5 million dollar deal with a royalty attached, roughly three times any other contract in the league. The shoe was produced for Jordan on 17 November 1984 and reached the public on 1 April 1985, selling out its initial 50,000 pairs. Retro High OG means the tall collar, the Wings logo at the ankle and the original proportions, so what you get in navy is the 1985 pattern in a colour the first run never offered.
Two ways to run it. First, indigo on indigo: mid wash straight leg denim, a white tee, a navy or charcoal overshirt, top two eyelets left loose so the collar leans instead of standing. Second, navy as the dark anchor under light: cream or stone wide leg trousers cropped just above the collar, a grey knit, nothing else competing. Navy is more forgiving than black in strong daylight because it does not flatten in photographs. The silhouette runs long, so most people take half a size down from their usual Nike running size. Dark leather shows scuffs pale, so keep a navy or neutral cream and a soft brush, wipe the midsole with a damp cloth rather than a solvent, and dry them away from direct heat.
The Air Jordan 1 became a culture object because basketball and hip hop walked through the same door. Nike's earliest advertising was directed by Spike Lee, who played Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan and moved the shoe into film language, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referenced Jordan and his sneakers in their music. The 1 is also the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity: original 1985 pairs have traded around 20,000 dollars on StockX, anchoring a resale market valued near 2 billion dollars. Midnight Navy lives in the quieter half of that history. It carries the silhouette's full weight without the colour blocking that announces itself across a room, which is why it lands on people who wear their Jordans rather than shelve them.
The High OG is a stitched panel study: toe cap, quarter, ankle wing and heel counter are separate leather pieces, which is why an Air Jordan 1 creases hard at the flex point and holds its shape everywhere else. Navy across the overlays with white beneath keeps every seam readable instead of burying it, so sloppy lacing shows. Nike Air cushioning entered the signature line with the Air Jordan 2, so the 1 sits on a flatter, firmer footbed than the models that followed and you feel the ground through it. The collar is padded but unstructured enough to fold down if you want the shorter look. Expect a tight midfoot for the first week while the eyestay panels break away from each other over the tongue.
