Designed by Peter Moore and released on 30 December 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Black/Orange/Gum. Chinese New Year releases are Jordan Brand designing for a calendar that has nothing to do with basketball, and the Year of the Tiger edition puts that on the Air Jordan 1 Retro Low OG, the original build of the silhouette Peter Moore drew in 1984 rather than a simplified version. The Tiger is the loudest animal in the cycle and the treatment usually answers with material and pattern rather than restraint. It is a good measure of how far the line has travelled from a Bulls rookie's team shoe: the same panel layout, produced for an occasion celebrated by a billion people.
An occasion shoe needs a plain outfit and a real occasion. Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black knit, a longline coat, so the shoe's decorative surfaces are the only ornament anywhere on you. Recipe two: dark denim, a plain red or cream crewneck picked from the shoe rather than added to it, a bomber, the celebratory but wearable version. Never pair with prints. Dry days, evenings, gatherings. Size true, lace fully for midfoot hold, clean by surface type rather than all at once, and store in a cool dry place where embroidery and applied materials will not catch or flatten.
Jordan Brand's collaboration and special release programme is how it stays global, running through Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, and through music with Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj. Occasion releases work on the same principle: the Jumpman, the 23 number and the shape itself are legible everywhere, so the storytelling can change without the object changing. Michael Jordan is the founding signature athlete and namesake, signed to Nike in 1984 in a deal that gave him royalties on sales.
Seasonal editions like this typically stack extra materials, prints or embroidery onto the 1's fixed panel structure, so the shape stays canonical while the surfaces change, which is the only way to make an occasion shoe without ruining the silhouette. Nike Air cushioning, in the line since the Air Jordan II, sits under the low cut, and the OG build keeps the original proportions. Mixed surfaces mean sectional care: soft dry brush on textured or embroidered areas, damp cloth on smooth leather, foam cleaner on the midsole, never a single wet pass over everything. Lace fully through the midfoot, since the low collar gives no ankle hold.
