Culture Note™
Released on 21 October 2023 and part of the Air Jordan 1 Zoom line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Black/Pale Ivory. Día de Muertos releases are Jordan Brand speaking directly to Mexico and to Mexican American communities, using a holiday about remembering the dead rather than a team palette. The Zoom CMFT 2 is the right vehicle for it: a Jordan 1 derived silhouette rebuilt for comfort instead of court performance, which frees the design to carry marigold tones, patterned textiles and symbolic detailing without pretending it is game equipment. The line has always worked this way once it became a standalone Nike division with its own apparel and collaborations, able to make shoes for a moment rather than a season. This is a celebratory shoe, warm and loud in places, built on a shape people already trust.
Give the pattern room. Black wide leg trousers and a plain black or bone tee let the marigold and the print carry the whole look, which is how these shoes are meant to be worn. For a warmer version, try washed brown corduroy trousers and a cream knit so the shoe's oranges read as part of an autumn palette rather than a costume. The comfort platform makes it the pair to wear on a day of standing, walking or travelling. Size true to your Jordan 1 size, expect more underfoot softness than a Retro, and keep printed and textile panels away from harsh cleaners, direct heat and long sunlight.
Jordan Brand's cultural work now runs well past basketball, through music collaborators including Travis Scott, Drake, Billie Eilish, J Balvin, Eminem and Nicki Minaj, and through team sport outside the sport it was born in, from the Michigan Wolverines football programme in 2016 to Paris Saint-Germain in 2018. Holiday editions belong to the same expansion: the Jumpman used as a cultural mark rather than a sponsorship logo. The line reached that position through hip hop and through Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, and it keeps it by showing up in the calendars communities actually observe rather than only in the NBA schedule.
Comfort is the whole brief. The CMFT builds take the Jordan 1 upper language, the panel layout and the ankle line, and set it on a softer, thicker platform with Zoom cushioning underfoot, which is a more responsive feel than the flat cupsole of a standard Retro. Mixed materials are typical of these celebration editions, so expect the textile and printed elements to sit alongside smoother panels and to need gentler care than plain leather. Because the platform is built for walking rather than lateral cutting, the shoe rewards long days on pavement. Clean patterned sections with a damp cloth only, and never soak an upper that mixes textiles with printed detail.
